I hate looking in the mirror and not recognising the person I see by Abbie Ziegler
Painting
Artist statement: I call this piece ‘I hate looking in the mirror and not recognising the person I see’.
Cancer treatment is harsh. Chemo takes away your hair - which I thought I’d be fine with, but it actually did make me very sad. Not from vanity. More from lacking my identity.
I also had to stop taking HRT when I was diagnosed with breast cancer. So those hormones that were telling my skin that it needed to stay perky were removed, and now I’m crumpled.
I have so many reasons to feel positive - I’m alive, the tumour has gone, my treatment is now mild, and my hair is growing again. But it’s still a shock to look in the mirror.
