Fatigue by Ayesha Chouglay
Poem overlayed on film photograph
Artist statement: I am a multimedia artist and writer with a focus on illness and disability. My work brings emotion to often overly clinical subjects, and is rooted in personal experience. ‘fatigue’ was written to encapsulate a feeling, a symptom, something that is difficult to pin down and explain. I overlaid the poem onto a film photograph that I had accidentally exposed to light, and feel that the fading, combined with the truthfulness of unedited film, coalesces well with the phrases.
I am interested in the ways that disability affects our perception of the world, and work with imperfections to create new ways of looking, aiming to create safe spaces for conversation and expression.
Text within the piece:
fatigue
my mind wrestles wool
neurons itch like thick toothpaste
each hour replicates
