Incantation for Healing by Cara Macwilliam
Ink on paper
Artist statement: 'Incantation for Healing' Ink on paper 74x52 cm. Every mark I make is a radical act around my illness, disability and healing on an interior level, even if my body remains sick physically. Coming into my 17th year of illness and over a decade being mainly housebound. I stared creating art in 2018 and it's the one thing I've found I can do around my symptoms, and it's transformed my 'sick' life. There is a tactility to touch on the paper that somehow replicates the human touch I no longer receive. Each medium I use, brings a different emotional exchange. I communicate via my art to an outside world, people listen, talk, purchase and seem genuinely touched and interested. Art has made me feel seen for the first time in a long time. This piece is from a new body of work I'm creating. These are visual incantations, maps, and migrations for healing.
