sacred heart chris timmins
wall hanging - largely made from acrylic felt, sewn with cotton thread on a sewing machine & including hand stitched plastic sequins and glass beads. the piece is hung on gold polyester yarn.
artist statement: 'sacred heart' was created as a way to explore my feelings as a disabled, fat, trans and queer person. the piece was created in early 2023, following a very big disability year - being diagnosed with t2 diabetes and cptsd, as well as understanding that i am autistic/adhd and continuing to experience long-term depression and anxiety disorders. throughout my life i have constantly been told that i am too much & too soft, that i take up too much space & take things too personally, largely due to my co-occurring disabilities. this fear of being too visible has held me back from many things in life - from relationships, to special interests & opportunities to travel and grow.
this piece is a reclamation of everything i have pushed away for the last 23 years, combining my love of textile art, fruit, poetry, glitter & the colour pink. being too much or too soft is not a bad thing - i want to fill my life with tenderness & joy, with people that love how full of care & passion i can be - i shouldn't have to silence myself or make myself smaller just so other people can feel more comfortable.
