Blossom Tree by David Jewkes
Acrylic on canvas
Artist statement: Symbolically, Cherry blossoms represent a time of renewal in one’s life, often being associated with spring. They also represent the fleeting nature of life. While it is true that they are an object of great fascination (people from all around the world swarm to places like Kyoto in order to see them in person), their life span is only very short. Cherry blossoms typically bloom for two
weeks. But they leave their mark regardless, with people regularly hosting cherry blossom parties with their friends and families. My own interest in cherry blossoms originates from Vincent Van Gogh’s work, Almond Blossom. Like Van Gogh, I was taken by both the aesthetic and frailty of the flower. In order to achieve the mass of flowers, I focused on using layers of paint to build up the
colours. I also focused on saturation. The effect is a colourful, textured piece that stands out on any wall.
