Artist statement: Red S syndrome is one of those less known conditions that effects many athletes & sports persons but is not spoken about, out of fear or possible disappointment.
I was diagnosed with red s syndrome in 2019 after over training extensively as a ballet dancer, the condition left me bed bound. Which as a dancer, creative and generally active person was a very difficult shift.
It was a portion of my life I guarded closely and chose to keep unaware to others around me, for a short period of time I learnt in one form what it feels to be disabled and unable to function in a way I was previously so comfortable doing. I had to learn to use my brain, body and spirit in a new way.
I spent months slowing my body down; And found support in this time through my creativity & photography. Finding ways to fuel my artistic side and continue connecting with dancers & creatives in a refreshing way that inspired me and others around me.
After 6months working like this I was able to re enter the dancing scene and also found myself in the modelling industry; with a new found creativity and a new found respect for my body.
It has taken me nearly a year to create a piece of work inspired by what I went through and the struggles of living with red s syndrome. I wanted to showcase my body in a way that did not display it as frail or broken but rather reborn and remade. This series hopes to highlight both the fragility and strength of my body.
