Artist statement: I’ve never been an artist professionally, but years ago, post divorce and struggling with severe mental health issues, and a newly single mum, I was encouraged to paint. I created this piece on canvas which I called “the helpers.” 

It is about a mother and child coming out of the darkness  and towards the light. The picture, over two canvases, is a combination of acrylics, oil brush painting and printing. Oil was used to create the sun, overpainted with acrylics so you can just, through the crackling, see the sun is starting to become visible. 
It was intended to be viewed horizontally, with me, underneath my daughter making sure she was safe, and at the time, a statement that I would always keep her safe and never let her fall alone. All the white and grey prints represent friends, families, professionals, medication, even my pharmacist at the time, who did their best to keep us safe and moving forward.
