Artist statement: My name is Maria and I have been a Type1 Diabetic for 43 years. My drawing/collage represents the moment I found out I was diabetic. I was 10 years old and had been feeling ill for about 2wks,  I was really thirsty and my mum had given me a packet of polos to help quench my thirst whilst we were waiting . Once with the GP there was a lot of talking over me, about getting to hospital quickly and  did we need an ambulance? The GPs only words to me were ‘and don’t eat any more of those…’ as he saw the polos in my lap… That day my life changed for ever as I was admitted to hospital and diagnosed as a Type 1 Diabetic. I have never eaten polos since.
