Artist statement: Likeness of the artist (whose default position is supine), made from leftover fabrics. Composite outfit fashioned in favourite hues (reds and purples); long thin limbs sewn from yellow jersey with black dots; feet clad in turquoise felt booties. No matter where we lie (beds, sofas, blankets on floors in pharmacies, waiting rooms, and - once upon a time - galleries): we love our colours! Mat and pillow come with a plant pattern and an (invisible) mythological beast.

A shock of woolly burgundy hair graces her tired head (an idealisation: her real hair is fine and - after 24 years of mostly untreated illness - greyish-brown). The pale blue face has bleary eyes and a line for mouth. A second face lies on her chest: pink, smiling, with large wakeful eyes. That one looks like she’s ready for action! Is that how I still see myself: lively, genial, alert? Let me count the minutes…
