Waiting for adrenaline, she was never a fan of her own hummus by Sara Kerry
Oil on board
Artist statement: I would not normally say that my work is about my sickness, about being chronically sick, about there not being a cure, about the constant explanation, about the activity of the disease, and then the frustration I often feel towards it, the sickness. The pain. The swelling. The exhaustion. It’s rare. And the constant second guessing. Is it? Isn’t it? I don’t know. It’s impossible to avoid or deny.
The paintings I made alone through the pandemic present activity and passiveness. Joyful and sad. In the painting she was always focused, active and passive.
Her skin colour is literal she’s blue because I’m physically blue, my skin is sometimes blue, the doctors keep saying. Even last week. They said you know the disease better than us. It’s active. But still we talked about the blue. The blue doesn’t matter so much. Kings Blue.
Small quick contained paintings were possible for me in my small safe place. Alone. They are illustrations of moments. Of endurance, side effects, and a hopeful not knowing. Peace.
